The Yakima Valley Quilters’ Guild has donated 52 quilts in response to the needs of the families affected by the White Swan fire. In addition, several pillowcases were also sewn and donated to the families. Guild members wanted to do something in response to the devastation that the families were facing.
Guild members had a number of quilts ready to be donated to local charities, and then spent two weeks sewing and quilting additional quilts to add to the number available to donate to the White Swan residents. Quilts of various sizes were donated.
Each year, YVQG members create and donate Comfort Quilts to several local organizations, including EPIC Crisis Nursery, the Buddy Bad program, YWCA’s Battered Women’s Shelter, Memorial’s NICU, North Star Lodge and others. In 2010, over 40 quilts were donated by the guild. In addition, a raffle quilt is created every other year with a portion of the proceeds from the quilt being donated to Memorial’s O’Hana to provide mammograms for women who may otherwise not be able to afford them. This year’s raffle quilt, “Stars in My Garden” will be raffled on May 14th at the conclusion of the guild’s upcoming quilt show in the Modern Living Building at State Fair Park.
The Yakima Valley Quilters’ Guild meets the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays at 7 p.m. at the Harman Center , 65th & Summitview in Yakima. There are approximately 75 active members of the guild. Contact us for more information on membership.
